Learning outcomes

The student understands the importance of interfacial forces and energetics, can account for the geometry of the interface, and can apply adsorption isotherms to chemical problems. The student knows the structure of solids and the notation for solid surfaces, understands the effect of structure on mechanical properties of materials, understands and can use simple models for the structure and self-assembly of soft and biological materials.

Contents

Physical chemistry of interfaces between liquid, solid and gas phases (surface tension and energy, effect of interfacial geometry, adsorption), charged interfaces (electrical double layer), surface forces (van der Waals, double layer and other forces), thermodynamics and structure of soft materials (colloids, aggregates, membranes, biological systems, polymers, liquid crystals), thermodynamics of self-assembly, structure of solid materials and solid surfaces, adsorption on solid surfaces, mechanical, electrical and optical properties of materials.
