After passing the course the students shall be familiar to the main analysis techniques used for analysis of biologically derived molecules, the specificities of sampling and preparation of biological samples, as well as about methods of bioanalytical chemistry. Students will acquire practical skills in analysis of biological samples, handling and interpretation data in various methods of analysis adapted to bioanalytical chemistry.


Bioanalytical chemistry focuses on determination and analysis of the structure proteins, peptides, DNA, drugs, and the goals of experiments performed in this field are e.g. protein and DNA sequencing, determination of drugs or their metabolites in a sample, determination of larger biomolecular structures, and characterization of specific intermolecular interactions by means of analytical chemistry specifically adapted for life sciences.

Bioanalytical chemistry gives understanding of biochemistry aspects behind the analytes of interest, but it is also about physical background of the instrumental methods, their possibilities and limitations. The knowledge acquired within the course are important in research, development and production in the pharmaceutical industry, health care labs, forensic labs, drug testing labs, proteomic and genomic research labs, plus technical jobs in all areas mentioned above.

The course presents analytical methods relevant to measurements in biochemistry. Understanding of biomolecules, their interactive forces and physical properties relevant to the needs in clinical chemistry will be developed. Error analysis and statistical treatment of data are also covered.

The following topics will be discussed during the course:
- Review of Biochemistry: Molecular features and functions including metabolic pathways in biosynthesis and catabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids.
- Review of Biological Physical Chemistry: The chemical and physical structure of biological macromolecules to their biological functions as derived from osmotic pressure, viscosity, diffusion, ultracentrifugation.
- Theoretical and experimental approach to spectroscopy. Absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis, Infra-Red), emission spectroscopy (Fluorescence, Luminescence), nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectroscopy.
- Chromatography: The Principle of Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography for Bioanalysis, Reversed Phase Liquid Chromatography, Ion Exchange Chromatography, Affinity Chromatography, Size Exclusion Chromatography
- Electrophoresis
- Ligand Immobilization: Conjugation chemistry, ligand density determination, effect of ionic strength and buffer, temperature and analyte concentration, limit of detection (LOD) and sample preparation.
- DNA sequencing: starting function of DNA. Presentation of sequencing methods in relation to personalized medicine. Fluorescence-based detection methods.
- Protein binding: Antibody-antigen interactions: ELISA-test, Flow Cytometry, Quartz Crystal Microbalance, Surface Plasmon Resonance
- Enzymatic analysis: kinetics of binding, amperometric glucose sensing
- Bioelectrochemistry and electrochemical biosensors: Bioelectrochemical methods: amperometry, voltammetry, potentiometry, and field effect.
- Present Immunoassays: Point-of-care detection, change detection, early detection of cancer markers.
- Quantification and Statistical treatment
