Learning outcomes

Students will learn critical thinking, research, and writing skills, social scientific argumentation and presentation skills necessary to accomplish their Master's thesis.

Contents

This course consists of four sections, each taken during one semester: MPAS2002 Seminar I (2 cr), MPAS2022 Seminar II (2 cr), MPAS2032 Seminar III (3 cr), and MPAS2042 Seminar IV (3 cr). The seminar supports students'; Master's thesis research and writing. Seminar I (literature review) and Seminar II (research plan) form the basis of the research for the thesis, and the seminar papers for Seminar III and Seminar IV present and discuss the results of that research. Students are assigned a supervisor at the beginning of their first term in accordance with their area of interest in contemporary East Asia: China (Lauri Paltemaa), Japan (Annamari Konttinen), and Korea (Sabine Burghart).
The 1st-year students (seminars I and II) and advanced students (seminar III and IV) convene in separate groups.
During the semesters students have a chance to participate in study and writing groups, based on the area of specialization (China, Japan, and Korea) and headed by doctoral students of CEAS.
