Learning outcomes

The dissertation seminar is a regularly-meeting postgraduate study seminar which aims to give the PhD students a chance to obtain diverse feedback on their dissertation texts and to train the student to evaluate scientific texts.

The dissertation seminar is the cornerstone of the Doctoral Programme in Law. It aims for one to ensure that doctoral candidates work systematically and productively, get sufficient supervision, support and diverse feeback of their disseration, and are trained to evaluate and discuss scientific texts.

Contents

During the first two years of her studies the doctoral candidate presents a text to be discussed in the dissertation seminar organised by the Faculty of Law. In addition the doctoral candidate acts as an opponent once a year and participates actively in the dissertation seminar two times a year during their postgraduate for four years.

Doctoral programme in Law organises three dissertation seminars during one academic year. In the dissertation seminars the doctoral candidates on their first and second year of doctoral studies have the chance to practise writing academic texts, obtain diverse feedback on their dissertation texts and to evaluate academic texts. Other doctoral candidates as well as researchers and teachers of the Faculty will participate in the seminars. Each seminar text is appointed an opponent among the doctoral candidates.

The seminar texts must be max. 20 pages long and be directly related to the student's doctoral dissertation. The doctoral student sends the text to the Research and Postgraduate Education Officer one week before the seminar at the latest. In addition to the text, the student should send a short description on how the text is positioned in the dissertation as a whole. Instructions on seminar proceedings are given separately.
