General description

The way you understand writing can make an important difference in your academic studies. Writing group breaks myths about good writers, supports doctoral students with their writing process, and provides doctoral students with pragmatic means to develop their academic writing skills and overcome barriers to writing.

Learning outcomes

By active participation in the group, the student
- learns to set realistic writing goals
- learns time management
- learns to develop and maintain a writing habit
- learns to manage writing as a process
- becomes aware of cognitive and emotional issues relating to writing
- practices academic writing
- learns to give feedback and support to his/her peers

Contents

The course consists of active participation in writing group for fall semester (September-December). More specifically, the modes of study include:

- Independent work (goal setting, writing)
- Weekly meetings and discussions with a writing partner (goal setting and sharing, follow-up, peer support, feedback)
- Weekly meetings with writing group (goal setting and sharing, follow-up, peer support, feedback)
- 4 seminars by Carol Kiriakos
- Participation in weekly writing sessions (optional)
