Learning outcomes

The student understands social scientific approaches and discussions related to social inequality and is capable of utilizing them in analysing societal phenomena.


The module introduces the theoretical and empirical traditions of social inequality research covering, for example, economic, cultural, health, educational and global inequality. It explores the ways in which different categories such as gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality interact to produce different forms of social inequality and injustice. It covers social inequality at both the levels of societal structures and lived experiences as well as the way in which inequality is reproduced and contested.

Further information

Teaching on the course is in English but the assessment can be done in either English or Finnish. In the academic year 2017-2018 the course is integrated with the English language course KIEN2262 English Academic and Professional Skills I, but the two courses can also be completed independently of each other. Students must pass both parts of the course (lectures and literature) before credits are registered.
