Learning outcomes

The student develops the skills to analyze and evaluate how processes of knowledge creation and innovation benefit from agents and interactions amongst users and producers in supportive environments, dubbed "innovation ecosystems" to understand the local and global interconnections of such ecosystems; and to understand the differences in the operation of the ecosystems in different institutional environments around the globe.

Contents

The process of generating new knowledge and applying it in innovative activities benefits from interactions of economic and other agents in what can be called "innovation ecosystems". These systems are formed by producers and users of products and services, multiple stakeholders (such as universities, research institutes, financiers, government bodies, local development agencies, etc.), and their interactions. Innovation ecosystems are often concentrated in specific localities or regions but their key agents and processes are at the same time typically connected to related agents, processes, and other ecosystems in different parts of the world. Examples of a range of innovation ecosystems around different products, services, technologies and platforms will be discussed during the course, both in advanced service economies and in developing economies. The role of universities in innovation will be highlighted. The global connections of ecosystems, and the challenges of building bridges across institutional environments and sharing views on sustainable innovation across systems will be explored.
