Doctoral Programme in Molecular Life Sciences (DPMLS)

Learning outcomes

Doctors of Philosphy (PhD) and Doctors of Science (PhD Tech.) have internationally oriented broad knowledge on molecular biosciences/life sciences and a special know-how on one of the main research areas of the Programme. Doctors have necessary skills to continue the career in academic or private sector.


The Doctoral Programme in Molecular Life Sciences (DPMLS) operates in one of the strongest research areas of the University of Turku. The doctoral programme is comprised of the research groups covering the disciplines from biochemistry, structural and molecular cell biology, bioenergetics, biotechnology, in vitro -diagnostics, to food sciences.
A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree can be completed in following major subjects: Biochemistry, Food Chemistry, Molecular Biotechnology and Diagnostics and Molecular Plant Biology. Doctor of Science (Technology, PhD (Tech)) can be completed in two major subjects: Analytical Biotechnology and Food Development.


A university degree in Finnish or foreign organization that gives eligibility for doctoral education.

The supervision arrangements (research director and at least one qualified supervisor) must be agreed with the Department in question before applying to the programme. The research plan of the applicant must fit the profile of DPMLS.

Doctoral Programme in Molecular Life Sciences (DPMLS)

Doctoral Studies 60 ECTS
Every doctoral candidate of the DPMLS makes a postgraduate study plan when applying the right to pursue a doctoral degree. The plan is made in collaboration with the supervisor(s) and the research director. The plan can be updated during the studies by agreeing on the changes with the supervisor and the research director. The professor who is the research director of doctoral studies is responsible for the eligibility of the studies to the doctoral degree.
