General description

The course provides students with basic knowledge on gender and family policies in Nordic welfare states, and comparative social policy research. During the course students will learn about different policy areas related to gender and family. Special attention is given to comparative social policy and understanding of the factors influencing different policy areas, and to outcomes of different policies, such as gender equality in the labour market, organization of care, and social and economic inequalities among different households.

The course starts with an introduction to the traditions and trends of the Nordic welfare state model. The introduction lecture is followed by three lectures on gender and family policies in Nordic countries and their trends and different outcomes. A week after each lecture, the topics are discussed together with other students in study groups.

During the course students write weekly assignments (3) on topics discussed in the lectures. The assignments are short essays (3-5 pages) based on the previous lecture and two articles related to each lecture’s topic (available on Moodle before the lectures). The weekly assignments are handed in before the next study group session (see schedule).
