Learning outcomes

Description: This is an introductory course to the study of bilingualism from a cognitive, neural, and developmental perspective. One can take either a 3 or a 5 study point package of the course (the longer one is obligatory for all students registered at the Åbo Akademi University). The 3 study point package includes 9 lectures, the 5 study point package also includes a bilingualism-related experimental task that entails some data collection, analysis, and writing of a final report.
Exam: for the 3 study point package one must pass a written exam based on the lecture materials and the obligatory course book. In addition to this, the 5 study point package requires that one submits an acceptable report of the bilingualism-related experimental task.

Learning goals: Show an understanding of major aspects of bilingualism at the individual level: definitions of bilingualism, neurocognition of bilingualism, becoming bilingual at early vs. later stage of development, psycholinguistic aspects of bilingualism, cognitive consequences of being bilingual. Show an understanding of the major bilingualism-related issues related to Finland, especially Finnish-Swedish bilingualism and acquisition/teaching of Finnish as the second language.

General description

Target groups: open as a non-obligatory course for all ordinary students and exchange students of Turku University, Åbo Akademi, and  Psykonet (via on-line video connection). 
Prerequisites: introductory studies in psychology (especially cognitive/neuropsychology) or psycholinguistics.
