General description

Tandem is a pair or a small group programme in which students work with a native speaker of the target language, to improve their language skills, confidence, and to explore the target culture. One of the two target languages is always Finnish.

The tandem pairs/groups meet weekly to speak both languages equally. During the course they each keep a learning diary or blog, and at the end of the course they report to the teacher in charge of the programme for the target language which is not Finnish.

Tahe Language Tandem is intended to complement other language studies, but it cannot be included in the obligatory language and communication studies.

When you get the contact information about your tandem partner/group, you need to arrange a first meeting. In the meeting, agree upon your schedule and discuss the content of the course. Make a draft of your planned studies, i.e. what kind of things you would like to practise or what kind of topics you would especially like to discuss. This general plan is meant to help you start  your studies - there is no need for dates or exact plans for each meeting. Send the plan to the teacher in charge of your pair by e-mail. After they have accepted your plan, you may start your tandem studies.  If you need any help, please contact the teacher in question.

To successfully complete the programme, students are required to actively and regularly participate in the meetings, and to write a learning diary or blog, which will be sent to the teacher in charge or your pair.

The learning diary should contain a detailed report in the target language of the topics that have been covered, and a reflection on your learning in your mother tongue. The length of the diary should be at least three 1.5-spaced typed sheets.

The learning diary will be sent to the teacher by e-mail, or published as an online blog.
