Learning outcomes

After the course the student knows how secondary metabolites can be detected from different plant species in spring and autumn by both simple and sophisticated chemical methods. He/she knows how this information can be used to explain taxonomic differences between the species, or species’ ability to form defence against insect herbivores or to participate in attractive fall coloration of plants. In addition, the student is able to identify tens of Finnish plant species by their morphological characteristics and gets hands-on knowledge of their most significant groups of secondary metabolites.
