General description

Judith Butler once quipped, "We lose ourselves in what we read, only to return to ourselves, transformed and part of a more expansive world.” Starting with Gender Trouble, her work which is the basis for much of Queer Theory, we'll take a closer look at the term "queer": the concept, representations, theories of and reflections on the term. We will look at key Queer Theory texts before delving into a selection of works which will enable us to examine topics such as coming out, gender, queer representation and media, asexuality, bisexuality etc. The goal of this seminar is to engage with the texts and theory in discussions, whilst connecting them to the current socio-political climate we live in and the necessity for such discussions to continue in order to become part of a “more expansive world”.

Students are expected to have read and prepare the assigned texts before each class. For the 5 credit points students are expected to write a response paper (instructions for writing a response paper here: https://twp.duke.edu/uploads/assets/response%20paper.pdf) of  5-7 pages. Submit your response paper to Moodle by 2 December at 16.00.
