Learning outcomes

The course gives the student an introduction to Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy techniques, their short historical developments, and their basis on molecular vibrations, symmetry and to spectra-structure correlations. Different measurement techniques (like diffuse reflectance, attenuated total reflectance, Infrared and Raman microscopy, and imaging) will be explained in order to give the student a broad overview of commercially available instrumentation. After the course the student is familiar with principles, instrumentation and application of FTIR and Raman molecular spectroscopy techniques.

General description

Review of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy as analytical and identification/problems solving tools in fields like forensics, medicine, planetary explorations, oil industry and pharmacology. Through the use of literature examples and case studies the joint application of these spectroscopic methods will be highlighted to show how development of workable strategies towards characterization and identification can be achieved. Emphasis will also be on combination techniques based on optical and electrochemical techniques, called spectroelectrochemistry, which is a field of specialization of the research group.
