This module aims at introducing the most central concepts and debates relating to social inequality, taking into account the history of ideas as well as current sociological research traditions. The focus will be on understanding the main positions and conflicts surrounding the conceptualization, explanation and legitimization of social inequality. Central will be issues of economics and power, as well as their intersection with gender and ethnic inequality. The Western hemisphere will form the main frame of reference for this module, but issues of global inequality will be touched upon.
The module consists of 9 lectures and 4 reading group meetings. The lectures will be assessed through an essay. The literature (see study material) will be assessed through an exam. The reading group meetings are intended to support students in preparing for the literature exam and provide space for further discussions on the topics covered in the course.
Passing this module requires passing the assessment of both the lectures and the literature.

The language of instruction in this course is English, but students can use either English or Finnish when taking the exam and writing the essay for this course. The course schedule is designed so that students may take the course “KIEN2262 English Academic and Professional Skills I” at the same time as this module. Taking both courses at the same time is recommended especially for Finnish degree students in the social sciences (for whom KIEN2262 is part of their mandatory modules), as the English course will provide further language support and this course’s reading material can be utilized also in the context of the language module.
