General description

Leisure, pleasure and consumption were central to the growth and development of Britain’s eighteenth-century towns. They were linked through the construction of a new material culture including new ranges of consumer goods and the physical development of shops, leisure facilities and dedicated leisure spaces. Growth of trade provided both the wealth and the goods for an emergent leisured culture. At the same time, traditional modes of leisure, often countryside based, continued to function as an important part of the life of the landed gentry as well as the workers on the land and in the villages.
