General description

This course serves as an introduction to the use of historical maps, spatial analyses, and preparation of georeferenced maps suitable for publication. The course does not require previous skills nor knowledge of the field, but requires extensive use of a computer. The course does not offer easy point-and-click-solutions to map making, and is only suitable for students willing to familiarize themselves with complex applications.
The course introduces the student in the use of various OpenSource GIS applications, like GRASS and QGis; the skills acquired will be relevant also for use with commercial applications. The students are expected to perform a set of analyses and to produce a variety of maps during the course; co-operative work between students is encouraged.
The course requires pre-registration and can only accommodate a limited number of students. Students having cultural history as their main subject and/or able to demonstrate a practice need for these skills are given priority, but otherwise the course is open to all interested students. The course is suitable for students at all levels.

Enrollment to the course by email to harri.kiiskinen@utu.fi before 12 Sep 2014.
