Master's Degree Programme in Baltic Sea Region Studies

Learning outcomes

The programme aims to prepare students for independent critical research, interdisciplinary scholarly work, regional expertise and later doctoral studies. Students acquire general knowledge on the region's history and present political situation, specializing in in-depth knowledge about political, social, economic and cultural development at national, regional and global levels. With these qualifications they have chances to be employed by a broad variety of academic, governmental, diplomatic or other institutions, and international or regional organizations. The programme produces highly qualified specialists with a profound knowledge of the Baltic Sea Region.


Baltic Sea Region Studies in as interdisciplinary Master's degree programme with a regional focus. It combines theories and methods from a host of academic fields to discuss and analyze the historical, political, social, economic and cultural development of the Baltic Sea Region, whose emerging importance was testified e.g. by the 2010 adoption of the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. Regional perspectives are related to the effects of globalization as well as the national, cross-border and international cooperation in and among the countries of the region.

Each student will study one semester (3rd) at a partner university as part of the specialization studies (joint program), or take an international summer school (at least 5 ECTS), or international internship relevant to the programme. The studies in the partner university must include at least 15 ECTS of subject studies. Students are encouraged to take also language studies. The language studies can not replace the compulsory subject studies, but they can be included in the degree as additional studies.

The main fields of study
The core modules cover fields in Contemporary History, International Relations, Nationalism Studies, Human Geography, Cultural Studies, Comparative Art Studies. In the Master's thesis a student can concentrate on one of these or combine two or more of them.


Academic requirements: a three-year Bachelor, Master or equivalent diploma in a relevant subject in Social Sciences, Humanities or Human Geography
Language requirements: a very good knowledge of English
