Master's Degree Programme in European Heritage, Digital Media and the Information Society

Osaamistavoitteet

The European joint programme "European Heritage, Digital Media and the Information Society" aims at producing top level professionals capable of building new and creative bridges between history, cultural heritage and information technology. By integrating the humanities and information technology, the programme offers the possibility of opening up new job possibilities for humanists. The program offers expertise, critical insight and theoretical knowledge on project management skills, multicultural collaboration, digital media, cultural heritage and European history.

Graduation from the programme with good grades gives students the right to continue towards a Doctoral degree in the School of History, Cultural Research and Art Studies (departments of Cultural History, Cultural Heritage, Digital Culture, Finnish history, General History), University of Turku.

The special fields of the University of Turku in this programme are:
* cultures of history
* tangible and intangible heritage including landscapes
* representations of heritage
* digital culture
* digital representations of history
* e-learning in humanities

Furthermore, the program offers various ways to take advantage of the special knowledge and expertise of our international partners. This is especially useful if the student has emphasis on multimedia production, applied computer science, digital library technologies and archives, historical-geographical systems or geographical databases.

The new programme is the result of the network focusing in European Digital Media and Cultural Heritage Studies (EUROMACHS) http://www.euromachs.net/.

Structure of studies

The programme is given as a joint degree in collaboration with international partners.

It is a two year programme amounting to 120 ECTS. The common language of teaching is English, but partner universities give a part of their optional teaching in their national languages.

The programme starts with the Web based International Seminar and with the introduction to theoretical and methodological questions. For the second semester students from each university will move to partner institutions where they will take part in the courses and seminars.

In the second year the students will focus on courses, project work and Master's Thesis in their home university.

Edellytykset

Student admission takes place every second year. Students are admitted to one of the partner universities (home university). The home university awards the degree with a diploma supplement. The quota for the University of Turku is 9 students.

Students admitted to the programme must hold a three years Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree at the university level in an applicable field, for example history or cultural studies. The degree should correspond to 180 ECTS.

Good knowledge of English language is required from the students admitted to the programme.
