Master's Degree Program in Materials Science

Learning outcomes

The Master's Degree Programme in Material Science aims to educate scientists to apply the principles of materials science in carrying out engineering or cross-scientific research projects using advanced technologies. The students will graduate from the program with main subject either Physics or Chemistry.


The Master's Degree Programme in Material Science offers the students a study program where chemistry and physics are integrated, and where teaching will cross the traditional borders that usually separate chemistry and physics. A student who has been accepted can choose either the chemistry or the physics track as major, depending on previous qualifications.

For both tracks the study programme consists of six different parts: advanced level courses, general studies including Finnish-language studies for non-native Finnish speakers, seminars, mini-projects or special assignments, and the Master of Science thesis. The master's degree requires a total of 120 ECTs. The number of obligatory courses are set to a minimum to allow the students a high flexibility in their preferred specialisation.

Advanced courses 40–60 ECTS
A minimum of 40 ECTS has to be selected from the lists below. The selection of the courses is done individually in the students personal study plan, which is done in collaboration with the heads of the program. A minimum 24 ECTS has to be taken from major subject (physics or chemistry) and a minimum 8 ECTS has to be taken from minor subject. Physics courses have a code with FFYS and chemistry courses a code with KEMI.
Language studies 0–5 ECTS
All foreign students whose native language is not Finnish must pass Finnish language courses (KIFF0003) worth at least 5 credits. All students with Finnish education background (suomenkielinen peruskoulu) are excused for the course and must instead pass virkamiesruotsi (KIRU2322 and KIRU2342) either in their BSc. or MSc. Degree.
Optional studies 0–20 ECTS
Up to 20 ECTS can be taken outside physics and chemistry, for example in biology, mathematics, IT-studies, biochemistry, geology, history, economy, social sciences, or languages.
Seminars 5–8 ECTS
The students have to actively take part in seminars that are organized either by the participating physics or chemical laboratories or by both simultaneously. During seminars the students present their own results achieved during their mini-projects or their MSc thesis work or listen to talks given by invited experts. Students can also earn ECTS for oral or poster presentations at national and international conferences. One such meeting is our annual MatSurf seminar, organized by the Turku Centre for Materials and Surfaces.
Mini-projects or special assignments 15–18 ECTS
Students take part in 'mini-projects' or 'special assignments' right from the beginning where the student joins a research team to work on a well-defined and time-limited theoretical or experimental problem. The student has to write a short comprehensive report about the results which will be evaluated. This work can, but not necessarily must, lead to the subject of the MSc thesis.
MSc Thesis 35 ECTS
The Master's thesis is a written report of a 6-month independent research project related to the program. The topic of the thesis is agreed upon by the student and the supervising professor. The work is carried out as full-time research in one of the groups of the participating laboratories.
